pussreboots , I will discuss my book-reading habits now.
1. To mark your page you: use a bookmark, bend the page corner, leave the book open face down?
Bookmark, though not in the conventional sense. I use “found bookmarks” instead of official ones. For eample, my current bookmarks are (1) a promo card for Star Wars III: Revenge Of The Sith with a picture that morphs from Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader, (2) an expired Japanese phone card with frolicking puppies on it.
2. Do you lend your books?
I don’t mind, but only to people who return them in decent condition.
3. You find an interesting passage: you write in your book or NO WRITING IN BOOKS!
I’ve been known to use a highlighter in books I read for research purposes. I don’t really write in them (apart from textbooks, which as we all know don’t count as real books), but I don’t have a hard, fast rule on it.
4. Dust jackets - leave it on or take it off?
I’ll take them off while reading them, since I do most of my reading on public transport, and the jackets get torn up when I carry the book in my bag.
5. Hard cover, paperback, skip it and get the audio book?
I’ll wait for the paperback, mostly for economic reasons, though it’s also a matter of weight in my bag. By paperback I mean “mass market” size, not trade paperback, though funnily enough, most of the writers I like don’t qualify for mass-market formats, so often I have no choice. And I don’t do audio books – they’re too dependent on the quality of the person reading it, and I’d rather do the reading myself than be read to.
6. Do you shelve your books by subject, author, or size and color of the book spines?
Due to space limitations, I use the Tetris catalogue system for maximum capacity utilization. If I had all the shelf space in the world, I’d probably separate into fiction/non-fiction at most, then go by author from there.
7. Buy it or borrow it from the library later?
I tend to buy – partly because I like to own what I read, and partly because the Hong Kong library system, while full of English-language books, tends not to have a whole lot that interests me. But mainly, I don’t like deadlines imposed on my reading time. The fact that I can renew is besides the point.
8. Do you put your name on your books - scribble your name in the cover, fancy bookplate, or stamp?
No, though that’s mostly a matter of laziness. And finding a plate/stamp I like.
9. Most of the books you own are rare and out of print books or recent publications?
Most of them were bought new in stores. I do have a some out-of-print books, but I wouldn’t say they’re rare.
10. Page edges - deckled or straight?
No preference.
11. How many books do you read at one time?
At least two.
12. Be honest, ever tear a page from a book?
Not even from a phone book.
