ITEM: Tim LaHaye – mastermind and co-author of the Left Behind series of novels about the Rapture – goes on Fox News and tells Mike Huckabee that the policy initiatives put forth by the Obama administration are bringing the country "closer to the Apocalypse."
How much closer, of course, depends on whether you follow the works of Harold Camping. In which case, it’s on for next year.
Of course it’s easy to laugh and say, “Well of course Fox News would treat the Apocalypse like an important news story, unlike ‘real’ news organizations like CNN, who would never do that.”
On the other hand, I am increasingly bemused by the contradiction of evangelical Christian activists who believe literally in the Rapture and subsequent Tribulation and Apocalypse – which they generally see as a positive thing in that it means the return of the Messiah, the defeat of Satan and Eternal Paradise – and their apparent desire to prevent it (or at least postpone it) by electing right-wing Christian presidents.
I’m not saying it’s wrong to believe in Revelations and the End Times. I’m just saying, look, make up yr mind – do you want Jesus to come back or not?
FUN FACT: Here in Asia, the Left Behind series is typically filed in the Science Fiction/Fantasy section. I'm not sure if this is also the case in the US. Those of you with information on this, feel free to pass it along.
