ORIGINAL CONSTITUTION GANGSTA
Jul. 31st, 2010 12:47 amLiving here in Hong Kong, I don’t keep up with US politics as much as I used to, though in recent years, this is less to do with distance and more to do with the polarized batshit that passes for political discourse these days. So I keep up with it mainly for entertainment purposes nowadays, because hey, who doesn’t enjoy a good crackpot conspiracy in the End Times?
The point is that I miss stuff sometimes. For example, I was unaware that some conservatives are hoping to bring back the 13th Amendment – not the current one banning slavery, but the Original 13A, which – had it been ratified – would have resulted in President Obama being stripped of his US citizenship and deported to Norway.
That’s because the O13A said this:
Which basically means it would be illegal for US citizens to accept Nobel Prizes. Or so conservatives like to believe. Which is ironic, since in order for that to actually be applied to Obama, they’d have to admit he was a US citizen first.
Anyway, the O13A (a.k.a. “Thirteenther”) movement has kinda-sorta gone mainstream – the Iowa GOP has officially adopted it into their platform (see Plank 7.19), along with just about any other idea the Tea Party has come up with. Which, incidentally, also happened in Maine, where Tea Party activists managed to rewrite the entire state GOP platform to their liking.
See what they did there?
Of course, whether that actually means anything depends on who you ask. If you ask Maine GOP chairman Charlie Webster, platforms are technically bullshit anyway:
So see? No need to worry. Platforms don’t actually mean anything. So you can put in any old crazy thing, because it's not like any of it will actually be legislated and made law. That's why gay marriage is legal in every state, for example.
It’ll be interesting to see just how far the Tea Party can take this. It's always possible that by 2012, the Tea Party will have co-opted the GOP (rather than the other way round, as the Republicans currently envisage things), which means the next Republican president will actually be a Tea Party president.
Which in turn could mean an inauguration performance by Ray Stevens.
So maybe the Apocalyse really IS coming up after all. I’m pretty sure John The Revelator made a reference to “Guitarzan” somewhere – it’s the fifth seal, I think.
This is how it ends,

"If any citizen of the United States shall accept, claim, receive or retain any title of nobility or honour, or shall, without the consent of Congress accept and retain any present, pension, office or emolument of any kind whatever, from any emperor, king, prince or foreign power, such person shall cease to be a citizen of the United States and shall be incapable of holding any office of trust or profit under them, or either of them."

Webster pointed out that platform itself is not binding on actual officeholders. "Platforms are a way for the activists to express their opinion, and as far I'm concerned this document is fine," said Webster. "But candidates don't run on the platform specifically. They run based on individual issues, and what the people in their areas want."
So see? No need to worry. Platforms don’t actually mean anything. So you can put in any old crazy thing, because it's not like any of it will actually be legislated and made law. That's why gay marriage is legal in every state, for example.
