LiveJournal’s new FaceBook/Twitter crossposting feature is getting a lot of negative feedback, but going through it, my impression was that some people were overeacting a little in terms of its actual capabilities.

So, via the plucky [livejournal.com profile] brangwaine  (and if you haven’t already seen it), here’s the most sober assessment of the feature that pretty much aligns with my impression of it, reposted in full (with permission).

Short version: don't panic )

Extra impressions:

None of this is to say the crosspost feature is a good idea or executed well. I understand crossposting yr own entries – crossposting comments on other people’s entries, not so much. And it’s worth stating that Friends don’t let Friends crosspost comments that link back to yr journal without prior written consent (though if it’s locked, no one aside from yr F-list could read it anyway, as far as I know).

Either way, you have my personal Team Def Guarantee that I won’t be crossposting anything that doesn’t belong to me. Everything’s on manual, and I won’t be ticking any boxes to enable it.

Ironically it’s not a huge deal for me anyway since neither my FB or Twitter accounts are registered with my LJ, and I don’t even use Twitter anymore. I do use FB, and occasionally crosspost certain items from here, but I do that by pasting the post link into the status update.

As for other people crossposting my stuff, I’m not too worried about it since (1) locked posts can’t be read by unauthorized people and (2) I do appreciate the publicity. Also, most of you seem pretty opposed to this on general principle, so I doubt it will come up.

Right. That’s all I got. Dismissed.
