And so we’ve reached the ten-year milestone with this weblog.
Not bad for a medium that’s been dead for years. To say nothing of a blogging service everyone said would die horribly after Russians bought it.
So I should maybe say something, but honestly I’m too tired to think of anything clever. And I’ve probably typed it before.
So as usual, thanks for those of you who have stuck with this thing for the last decade, or even in the last year. Broadcasting will continue on this channel.
Meanwhile, here are my station IDs elsewhere on the web:
1. Dreamwidth
2. Facebook
3. Tumblr (for my NSFW stuff).
4. Goodreads
And of course you can catch my half-assed rock band on both Facebook and Soundcloud.

THE IDES OF MARCH (2014 EDITION)
Mar. 15th, 2014 11:44 pmOnly I don't have much to say I haven’t said in previous anniversary posts – especially the previous one.
I could probably even repeat this joke and get away with it.
Also, notice those are Dreamwidth links. Indeed.
Anyway, yes. We are wrapping up Year 9 on LJ. As Shonen Knife has said, we are very happy you came.
The bloggery will continue until morale improves. Or until you all quit LJ. And even then I’ll probably keep at it.
Meanwhile, for those of you considering moving on, here’s where else you can find me on the interwub:
1. Dreamwidth
2. Facebook
3. Tumblr (for my NSFW stuff).
And of course you can catch my half-assed rock band on both Facebook and Soundcloud.
Carry on.

WHERE AM I?
Oct. 14th, 2013 11:06 amPart of it had to do with a very busy travel schedule and work deadlines more intensive than usual, and also a little bit of burnout in terms of current events, which have really been variations on similar themes, and I just didn’t have much to say.
But yes, it’s also because I’m off on other sites as well.
So I thought I’d give a quick rundown on my various locations if yr keen on following my antics elsewhere and not already following me on one of the other places (though there is a lot of crossposting anyway).
The obvious ones:
Dreamwidth
LiveJournal
The inevitable one:
Watch me read books:
Goodreads
For sophisticated adults only:
Tumblr
And then there’s my musical pursuits with Banäna Deäthmüffins:
Soundcloud
ReverbNation
Bandcamp
Note that I don't use ReverbNation or Bandcamp that much right now. But that may change. So watch this space. Or that space. Or … oh, YOU know.
Also, I’ll just add that this isn’t me giving notice about leaving DW/LJ. I still plan to keep these blogs. I just don’t have a whole lot to blog about at the moment, or a whole lot of time to blog it.
Everywhere at once,

DO NOT ADJUST YR LIVEJOURNAL
Aug. 15th, 2013 11:03 pmIf you’ve been seeing recent posts of mine pop up more than once on yr friends page, it’s because of the following:
1. I crosspost from Dreamwidth.
2. LJ has been super-slow in completing the crosspost.
3. So slow, in fact, that I assumed it failed and manually reposted on LJ –
4. – after which LJ finally got around to processing the crosspost.
Which I assume is because Obama and Vlad Putin are fighting again. Or something.
We apologize for the inconvenience.
Double vision,
This is dF

Not that you’ll notice, unless you enjoy the icons I use on LJ.
I let my paid LJ account expire over the weekend.
Which means I’m back to an ad-supported Plus account. The only real downside (apart from saving USD20 a year) is having my icon library slashed to 15, which isn’t a huge deal, though I wish they’d let me choose which 15 I can keep.
On the plus side, you’ll get lots of ads about the latest movie and music releases. Isn’t that nice?
Anyway, as I’ve said before, I’m not leaving LJ, but it does feel like LJ is on its way out as an entity as more people abandon ship. So there’s no sense in sinking money into it.
The $20 question is, of course, if I’ll upgrade Dreamwidth to a paid account. I haven’t decided yet, but honestly, I’ve gone this far on a basic account, and the only feature I ever really made use of from my premium LJ account was the icon space. And let’s admit, no one’s really sure how long Dreamwidth will be around.
That said, it’s not off the table (as they say in The Beltway), so we’ll see.
Meanwhile, broadcasts will continue as normal.

THE IDES OF MARCH (2013 EDITION)
Mar. 18th, 2013 10:33 amOr maybe I should say my blogging activity started eight years ago Friday. "This blog" is a loaded term, seeing as how it comprises two continuous LJ blogs and a parallel Dreamwidth blog.
Anyway, given the state of LJ today, just being here feels like an accomplishment. A lot of people I’ve met here have moved on to Facebook or Dreamwidth or Tumblr, often out of anger. Every time LJ gets a DDoS attack, or introduces a new change, it’s usually the last straw for somebody, and it gets a little quieter.
I’ve remarked on this in past anniversary posts – usually by explaining why I’m still here. Which typically breaks down to two reasons: (1) the things that are driving people off LJ don’t bother me very much, and (2) it’s been generally quiet here since I started this thing.
Those two reasons are still in play. But so, I admit, is a third reason: inertia. LJ is still my preferred format for posting anything more complicated than a GIF or a quick music video (and I still rely on a lot of those here anyway) – long rants, serials, and other things that don’t work as well on Facebook or G+. Put another way, I need a place to put stuff like that, and if not on LJ, where?
Okay, yes, Dreamwidth, but that’s more or less the same thing, since I can cross-post easily enough. (I’m doing it right now, in fact.)
But I confess I do tend to spend more time on Facebook these days. I’m making more new friends there than I’ve made here in a long time, and interacting with them more. But again, it’s a limited platform.
So I don’t intend to quit LJ/Dreamwidth, if only because I have a need for this kind of format. But I might go ahead and let my paid LJ account lapse.
Meanwhile, for those of you planning to bail on LJ I suppose it’s appropriate to mention where else I can be found at the moment.
1. Dreamwidth
2. Facebook
3. Tumblr (for my NSFW stuff).
Actually I rather like the Tumblr format, and I’d probably move this blog there if it wasn’t for Tumblr being even less reliable than LJ. (You think LJ has outage problems? You should see what happens when Tumblr fails. And they don’t even have the luxury of being able to blame Russian Mafia hackers.)
Anyway, for those of you still around, thanks for tuning in. Broadcasts will continue as normal.
CONSUMER TIP: If you want to friend me on Facebook, be sure to let me know who you are if yr Facebook name is different from yr LJ handle. I don't add people I don't know, and I've let more than a few friend requests lapse because I didn't know that was an LJ person on the line.
Still here,

THE IDES OF MARCH (2012 EDITION)
Mar. 15th, 2012 11:20 amAnd also kicks off Year 8.
I’m not sure that I have much to say beyond what I said last year, though I did learn that I’m only capable of doing one proper blog at a time.
"Proper" meaning something like LJ or DW. I can also do FB, Tumblr and G+, but they're relatively low-effort. And I still do more here than I do there.
Other than that, the only other relevant topic is LJ’s DDoS issues, and I’ve already said what I have to say about that.
So here we are. Or what’s left of us. That’s how it is in this thing we call social networking. People come. People go. Either way, I’m happy you came.
On with the bloggery.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO DR LOVE BANANA?
Oct. 29th, 2011 07:29 pmI’ve stated my reasons for it here.
What does that mean for you?
Well, for one thing, you may have noticed that ever since I started MLB a year ago, the frequency of Sexy content on this here blog has decreased somewhat.
So you’ll be seeing a lot more of stuff like, say, vintage 60s topless dancers shimmying to Shadows Of Knight.
Starting right about now.
( Seriously. I'm not fooling ... )
Maybe not that much more of it. I don’t know yet.
But one reason I created MLB was to have a separate place for it in case that’s something you didn’t want when you signed on here. On the other hand, all of you seem like responsible adults to me. Also, everyone’s dropping LJ for Google Plus and Facebook anyway, so it never hurts to spice up the programming a little.
So here’s the deal: yr going to see nudity here (albeit tasteful, always tasteful) from time to time, but I’ll employ the Cut function when necessary – not so much to avoid offending anyone as to avoid making yr Friends Page more NSFW than it already is. (See? Tasteful AND responsible!)
That said, since I’ll probably limit those kinds of posts to the weekend, when most of you aren't around anyway (because you have lives and stuff), I don’t expect to use the Cut function that often. Because what’s the weekend without a little sin, skin and shenanigans?
You’ve been warned.

And we’re back. At least for now.
Speaking of which, there will be talk about the LJs and whether it’s worth staying.
My opinion hasn’t changed since the last DDoS attack.
However, those of you who want to bail but still wish to keep up with my internet antics can always find me on the Dreamwidths or the Facebooks.
Also, as of five minutes ago, if yr one of those people beta testing Google +, you can find me there under the name John dEFROG … though I can’t promise I’ll actually do anything there yet. I need to fool around with it first.

THE WAR ON LIVEJOURNAL
Apr. 8th, 2011 11:09 pmThere has been talk about LiveJournal, the DDoS attacks and the exodus of some users to Dreamwidth, Blogger and other sites not currently on the Kremlin hit list (or whoever is behind it).
Personally, I can’t be too hard on LiveJournal, partly because it’s not their fault they’ve been singled out for attack, and partly because I know enough about DDoS attacks to know that whatever safeguards you put up to defend against them or mitigate their impact, if someone wants to take you offline badly enough, they can and will do it, even if just for a little while, unless you have the resources of, say, a major ISP.
Also, the revelation that the wave of attacks is apparently targeted at Russian bloggers posting political stuff makes it hard for me to abandon LJ on general principle.
Okay – the fact that I’m a paid user who just renewed his account a week ago is also a factor. So it’s not like I’m being noble about this or anything.
Anyway, back when a lot of people were convinced LJ was going to go belly up when SixApart sold it to SUP, some people defected to Dreamwidth, or set up accounts there just in case. I’ve had my own account here (or rather there), for a couple of years now, though the only thing I’ve done with it is create a backup of my current LJ (and my previous LJ, so it’s my entire bloggery career all in one place – hurrah!). And one good thing to say about Dreamwidth is that it enables easy crossposting to LJ (provided yr not crossposting embedded videos – it seems a little flaky on that score, but it’s manageable. Also, cross-posting user icons seems to be out).
So, the obvious solution seems to be to broadcast from Dreamwidth and keep both blogs running that way. Which is what I’ll be doing – at least for a little while, to see how it works. From the reader’s POV, you won’t notice the difference apart from the little cross-post notifications.
And it goes without saying that if yr on Dreamwidth, you can add me at any time.
Carry on.

Re: Comments on the LJs
It’s only fair to mention that another reason I don’t get hung up on comment frequency is because I don’t comment much myself. And yet I read my f-list every day.
The reason I don’t comment much – apart from being the quiet wallflower type at social events (stop sniggering in the back) – is because a lot of posts don’t really lend themselves to commentary from me. That’s because a lot of posts tend to fall into one of two categories:
1. I agree with/like it, but don’t have much to say about it beyond “I agree with/like this”. Which, I have to admit, is one thing Facebook gets right that LJ could use: a “like” button. There are times when you want to type out something like that, but not all the time.
2. It’s something deeply personal about the person’s life. Which is fine if I happen to know you really well and am familiar with the situation offline. Otherwise, I don’t feel comfortable commenting on things like that because, let’s be honest, what the hell do I know about you and yr personal life? Okay, apart from what I read on yr LJ. But that’s not really the same as knowing someone – at least not to the point of me posting some half-assed comment. Obviously there are exceptions (like friends/family members passing away), but for the most part I wouldn’t know what to say.
Which, incidentally, is true of me in real life. I’m terrible at consoling people. Ask any of my former friends. (Humor.)
Anyway, the upshot of it is that while I’m not commenting, I am reading. Or “lurking”, as the kids say today. And so I assume the same is true of all of you. And I’m good with that.
Of course, if I ever do want to see how many of you are paying attention, I’m told that there are two sure-fire topics guaranteed to generate comments on the LJs:
1. Hot soviet dictators
2. The Strokes and/or Interpol (the band, not the law enforcement agency)
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
Anyway, enough of this soul-bearing introspection (and yes, this counts as soul-bearing for me). The next post will be Sexy.

THE IDES OF MARCH (2011 EDITION)
Mar. 15th, 2011 10:48 amToday marks the sixth anniversary of my presence on the LJs (though not this specific blog, which I started in late 2007).
I’m racking my brains trying to think of something clever to say about it. Honestly I’m not coming up with much. One thing I can say is that I’ve learned an important lesson in doing this:
Blogging is a lot like college radio. You do yr show, play yr music and say what’s on yr mind, imagining all the while that yr friends are out there listening and digging it – when in reality most of them don’t even have their radio turned on.
Which is the case with me. Sure, I have 62 followers (which is probably about 5x as many people as used to listen to my radio shows), but most of you are people I’ve met here on LJ. Of all the meatspace friends I’m in contact with, almost none of them read this blog.
This isn’t their fault, of course. I know it’s nothing personal. They have lives, and each life comes with different priorities, some of which are beyond control. Few of them listened to my radio show as well for similar reasons.
Granted, a key difference is that radio is a fixed yet ethereal medium – it goes out into the ether live, at a fixed time, for one broadcast only, never to be heard again unless someone bothers to tape/archive/syndicate it. With blogs, it’s all recorded and time-shiftable – and still most people I know will never see the vast majority of what I post, mainly because they’re not on LJ and never will be. The only way I can reach them is on Facebook – and even there, most of what I post goes unnoticed and/or "unliked" (and that’s due to the fact that I’m competing with a million other posts in their news feed, 80% of them Farmville updates).
Which begs the question: why bother?
The answer – at least for me – is that I do it for the same reason I did college radio: partly for the love of the medium, partly for my own amusement, and partly to keep in practice. And yes, because I'm an opinionated bastard. But I also do it for the few people who do tune in for whatever reason, whether I know them or not.
(I believe the medical term for this is “sheer bloody-mindedness”. I’ll have to check.)
The same applies to comments (or lack thereof). I get very few of them, but it’s really no different from college radio in that respect – hardly anyone ever called in apart from the occasional request, often for songs I had no interest in playing (Skid Row and Warrant were common examples). If anything, the bloggery gets a better response (with the caveat that I don’t have a troll/spam problem, or a lot of psychotic ex-girlfriends/boyfriends/spouses tuning in, as I know other people do).
All of which I mention because I’ve seen other LJers despair from lack of commentary. But for me, it’s like I’m back in the DJ booth broadcasting to the ether. I just assume that yr out there, and yr getting it, even if you don’t phone in.
Which is my meandering way of saying thanks for tuning in, and that broadcasts will continue as normal.
On with the countdown,

Same as it ever was.
Actually, I’ve been around. But my Xmas holiday has been ... not so much busy as active enough to keep me from posting regularly.
Plus, I needed to break the habit. I’ve discovered that my quest to keep this thing updated daily is getting in the way of my ability to do other things. Like write The Great American Porn Novel. Or finish putting together my music studio so I can get cracking on that concept album (working title: Chinese Democracy).*
Plus, I’ve found that the

Extra impressions:
None of this is to say the crosspost feature is a good idea or executed well. I understand crossposting yr own entries – crossposting comments on other people’s entries, not so much. And it’s worth stating that Friends don’t let Friends crosspost comments that link back to yr journal without prior written consent (though if it’s locked, no one aside from yr F-list could read it anyway, as far as I know).
Either way, you have my personal Team Def Guarantee that I won’t be crossposting anything that doesn’t belong to me. Everything’s on manual, and I won’t be ticking any boxes to enable it.
Ironically it’s not a huge deal for me anyway since neither my FB or Twitter accounts are registered with my LJ, and I don’t even use Twitter anymore. I do use FB, and occasionally crosspost certain items from here, but I do that by pasting the post link into the status update.
As for other people crossposting my stuff, I’m not too worried about it since (1) locked posts can’t be read by unauthorized people and (2) I do appreciate the publicity. Also, most of you seem pretty opposed to this on general principle, so I doubt it will come up.
Right. That’s all I got. Dismissed.

THE IDES OF MARCH (2010 EDITION)
Mar. 15th, 2010 10:23 amSo I just had to post these, didn’t I?
[The second one is "Five Years Time" by Noah and The Whale, in case the link isn't showing up in yr browser.]
That’s all I have, really. I don’t have a lot of wisdom or pithy observations on the evolution of blogging. I can safely say that it’s still my preferred form of Internet communication, with Facebook serving as a supplemental link-dump (and replacing Twitter in the process).
Anyway, thanks for tuning in and putting up with my crap this far. I’ll try to make 2010 as entertaining as possible. And I’ve got four days in Seoul coming up next week, so that should give me some fresh material.
Meanwhile, at the risk of deafening silence, I’d like to open up the request line and kick off what we call the audience participation. I’d like to know which parts of this blog are working or not working for you – what you’d like to see more of, or less of, or whatever.
Not that I’m likely to drop the less popular stuff. But, you know, I live to entertain you people.

Now for breaking news.
Some of you have been asking, and I’ve been putting off this decision until the last minute, but it’s official:
I will not be participating in NaNoWriMo this year.
Part of the reason is time management. It’s going to be a pretty busy month, workwise, and I don’t know that I’ll have the time even to bash out 50,000 words of gibberish. (As opposed to the usual gibberish, of course.)
The other reason is that, if the last few NNWMs are any indication, the result will be yet ANOTHER unfinished manuscript that I’ll still be working on by NNWM 2010 – which technically means that I’m signing up for the wrong event (assuming there’s such a thing as National Novel Writing Year). In any event, I’d just as soon spend some time trying to complete at least one of the projects on my plate.
Also, I’m being goaded by former bandmates and groupies to start recording some music again, now that we’re in the Web 2.0 Age and crap. So I’d like to free up some time to give that a shot, just to see what happens.
So I’m skipping out this year. For those of you who are going for it anyway, best of luck and I’ll be monitoring yr progress.
If it’s any consolation, National Blog Posting Month is still a go.

Why was I not notified of this?
Remind me what I pay you people for. Honestly, throw me a bone here.
Now I have to post a Media FAQ so Neil Cavuto will stop leaving messages on my machine asking for a two-on-one interview with my Love Captain.
MEDIA FAQ ANSWERS
1. Is Agent Provocateur’s Love Force affiliated with the Def Love Army?
No. The Love Force has nothing to do the Def Love Army. Our uniforms don’t look anything alike.
2. Is yr production company, Terribly Frog Productions, responsible for the new ultimate NSFW Rammstein video, “Pussy”?
No. While it’s true we have been advocating hardcore porn in music videos for some time, we were thinking of something classier.
3. What about the new TV show Glee?
Let me be clear: Team Def is not associated with Glee. If we were, the students would be dancing to Rammstein. And they wouldn’t be making veiled oral sex references. They would be performing it on screen (provided they are over 18, of course, but I have yet to see a TV show set in a high school where the actors were younger than 25, so that wouldn’t be a barrier). I’d have thought this was obvious. Evidently not.
