I learned a long time ago to be wary of The Next Big Thing. “Big” doesn’t always mean “Good” (according to my narrow, biased tastes, of course) and more often than not the hype isn’t justified even if they are pretty good. And sometimes, a band/artist that seems amazing at the time loses its/his/her shine a few months down the road and you find yrself wondering what you ever saw in them.
All of which means I’m not quite sure how I’ll feel about
Anna Calvi once springtime rolls around.
But she is generating some excitement on the British indie scene at the moment. And – for the moment – I can see why, though the PJ Harvey comparisons are completely lost on me. Calvi reminds me more of Chris Isaak by way of Wong Kar-wei/David Lynch movie soundtracks. Lots of drama and reverb, then.
Anyway, I am impressed.
Now listen to this.
PRODUCTION NOTE: The video is almost two years old, but the song appears on her debut album, which is out now.
