I mentioned in my Best of 2010 round-up that for all my talk about “new” music, I’ve reached a point where the best music I hear these days seems to come either from bands who have been around for 30 years or more, or who borrow heavily from those bands.

The Lords of Altamont are a little of both. Lead singer Jake “The Preacher” Cavaliere has been around since the early 90s (you may remember his band The Bomboras on Rob Zombie’s imprint label), and drummer Harry Drumdini replaced Nick Knox in The Cramps around the same time.

But they trade heavily in 60s psychedelic garage rock. And they have the go-go dancers to prove it.

Listen. And watch.

Cheers to [livejournal.com profile] bedsitter23  for the tip.

Johnny Carson delivered this monologue on The Tonight Show in 1991 )

Which I mention for three reasons:

1. It’s funny as hell.

2. It’s strikingly relevant.

3. Late-night talk show hosts could get away with this on network television in 1991.

Well, you can get away with it today as well – but not without pundits dithering over whose side yr on and trying to discredit you as a biased partisan hack who hates America.

That’s because 20 years ago, making fun of the US govt was fair game and a comedy staple. These days, it’s only funny if it gels with yr talking points.

And that’s what democracy means to ME: the freedom to mock authority regardless of which party is in charge because let’s face it, they’re both run by nincompoops.

Make me laugh,
