I’ve known about Johnny Dowd for awhile now, mainly through compilations and a guest appearance on a Jackie Levin album. He’s got an interesting niche – spoken-word vignettes set to punk-influenced electroclash music. With a thick Texas accent.

The results tend to range from mesmerizing to hilarious. I’ve always liked what I’ve heard by him, but he gets no distribution in Asia or the other countries I tend to frequent, so I’ve never had a chance to get any of his albums.

But now that I’m relying more on Amazon to get any new music, I’ve got his new album, No Regrets, which is ostensibly a concept album with 13 songs about ex-girlfriends.

Whether they’re real or imagined women, I have no idea. But it’s one of the better and more fascinating albums I’ve heard this year.

Here’s the opening track, which involves calling up an old girlfriend to reclaim a jacket. It gets a little creepy at the end, but it’s good stuff.

Uncle Josh! Hoss Linneman! Shot Jackson! Deacon Brumfield! Bashful Brother Oswald! Random sexy hay girl!

That Dobro Sound’s Goin’ ‘Round (1960s) I want Bashful Brother Oswald’s hat.
