Somewhere in Tampa:

PRODUCTION NOTE: Yes, I know this is from 1992. That doesn’t mean this isn’t happening in Tampa right now.

FUN FACT: There was such a thing as bipartisan political humor once.

Also, people really used to wear straw hats at conventions.

Nice tips,

As you may have guessed, I don’t have a lot of interest in the Republican Convention. Here’s one reason why:

This my favorite convention story EVER

Okay, the lack of death metal is probably irrelevant. I don’t watch conventions, or really care about them. They were interesting back when the outcome was less certain, but nowadays they’re just a glorified coronation ceremony and a chance to rally the party base. Big deal.

Also, I confess I’m not a huge fan of the death metal.

But I’d totally watch if Deicide played, just to see the looks on everyone’s faces.

I’m behind on my amateur movie reviews. I’m sure you’ve noticed.

Let’s fix that now.

The Dark Knight Rises

The thrilling conclusion to the Nolan Batman trilogy that had a lot to live up to after the tour de force of The Dark Knight, especially with a lot of people not being particularly impressed with the initial prospect of Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Tom Hardy as Bane.

For me, it pretty much lived up to my expectations – which is to say, it doesn’t top TDK, but it’s still a great note to go out on. Good storytelling, good acting, and Hardy makes a far more menacing and interesting Bane than I ever would have imagined, even if he’s not quite compelling a character as the Joker’s representation of chaos. Also, Hathaway makes a very good Catwoman, although I thought the romance angle felt a bit rushed.

And this is a nitpicky thing, but I’d just as soon have seen Nolan opt for a more ambiguous ending, especially the final scene, given the set-up for it. Apart from that, it’s a solid Batman film and a good wrap-up to Christopher Nolan’s run. However WB/DC handle the inevitable reboot, whoever gets the deal for a new Batman series has their work cut out for them.

Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted

Franchise sequel in which everyone in the first two films ends up in a ramshackle European circus. Amusing much of the time – particularly where the penguins are involved – but honestly I spent a lot of the film thinking, “This film shows the rest of the world what Americans think of when they think of Europe.” Make of that what you will.

She’s so European,
