Continuing this year’s trend of
Grumpy Old Men saving music, one of the contenders for my Best Of 2012 list is Andre Williams.
Williams made a name for himself in the 50s and 60s with hits like “Jail Bait” and “Bacon Fat” and others, wrote hits for Motown and Checker, wrote a few songs for P-Funk in the 70s, then – like many R&B singers of his era – went on to do mostly hard drugs and jail time.
But in the last six years, he’s been collaborating with alt.country band The Sadies, as well as Jon Spencer, and the result is Night And Day, a collection that ranges between blues and country-rock, and sounds a lot like … well, a guy who’s done hard drugs and jail time.
And it’s brilliant.
Listen.
I’m not that familiar with The Sadies as such, and this might not make me a fan, but this is the most entertaining collaboration between Old School Legend and Hip Alt.country Band since Roky Erickson and Okkervil River.
