As inevitable as Chanel No. 5, Banäna Deäthmüffins – the best death-pastry rock band in Hong Kong and the 38th worst band on Facebook – is back.

Not only that, we are back with two things we’ve never done before:

1. A political song.

2. A music video.

We don’t really do political songs, but we were inspired after seeing a former bandmate of mine in the 90s post his own song for the election. It was a humorous anti-Obama song, and rather clever if yr a Republican who thinks any insulting reference to Obama is comedy gold and a grand political statement about how terrible a president he is.

And I thought, “Well, clearly any schmo can do this.”

That said, I’ve always felt that the challenge of being too overtly political in music is that you’ll alienate people who might otherwise like it. You can afford to do that if yr, say, Neil Young. But when yr fan base is roughly the size of the cast of Gilligan’s Island, not so much.

So I went for something more bipartisan – at least in the sense that I didn’t go after the candidates so much as the batshit political posts I get from both sides on Facebook.

Why a music video for it? No idea, except that during the mixdown, it occurred to me how much fun you could have making a music video for it using a lot of Facebook memes.

Also, it was high time we did a music video, because I’ve heard music videos are going to be a big deal for bands, so why not? And there’s this thing called YouTube that lets you show them to people without having to sleep with anyone at Viacom.

Here you go.

Meanwhile, this is how we follow the US POTUS election in Hong Kong:

SUBWAY ELECTION CENTER, The US POTUS election: full coverage in the Central MTR station, Hong Kong, October 2012

That’s in Central Station on the MTR (a.k.a. the subway).

Obviously it’s a marketing gimmick from CNN and the two major cable-TV providers here. But it’s also likely to get eyeballs, as the election results will start coming in on our Wednesday morning. Sure, most people who are interested will just use their smartphones or iPads.

Still, I always find it interesting to see how US elections get covered overseas. As I’ve mentioned before, it’s a very big deal when the self-proclaimed Leader Of The Free World chooses its captain, because it does have an impact on everyone else at some level.

Most Americans, I expect, don’t fully appreciate this. But imagine yr economic trade situation, or regional political stability, being dependent on the outcome of, say, who becomes the prime minister of the UK. Or president of China. And having basically no say in the matter.

Well, that’s how a lot of non-Americans feel about POTUS.

FUN FACT: For the record, according to the BBC, if the world DID have a say in this election, Obama would win.

I’m just saying.

Certain people, of course, are smirking over the fact that Obama is the most popular in France (and we all know what they’re like).

But that’s okay, since according to the Beeb, Romney’s biggest overseas fan base is in Kenya.

BOOM!

I can’t say I’m a huge fan of Norman Rockwell.

But this is one of my favorite paintings by him: “Breakfast Table Political Argument”.

Looks like every political argument I see on Facebook.

And more often than not, I’m the kid on the floor.

FUN FACT: If yr wondering, they’re arguing over Dewey vs Truman. So you know which one’s gonna sulk after Election Day.

Home wrecker,
