Yes, I know, I’m supposed to be working, but just saw [via Warren Ellis and [profile] puffdoggydaddy] that Arthur C Clarke is dead, and thought it was worth a mention.

I’m kind of a casual fan of his work – I don’t read him that often, but tend to enjoy it when I do. I have to take him in small doses, though – like a lot of hardcore SF writers, he’s brilliant with ideas but weak with characters. Which may be why I tend to enjoy his short stories more.

That said, my favorite book of his (so far) is Rendezvous With Rama, which has one of the best punch lines ever written in SF regarding the relationship between humans and the rest of the universe.

Soon to be a major motion picture, evidently.

And of course there’s 2001, which is far more accurate than it looks at first glance.

Oh, and he invented satellites. Respect. I think I'll buy one of his books tomorrow in the mall next door, if they have any.

NOTE: The title is a variation of the Kurt Vonnegut joke, in honor of the fact that Clarke was an atheist. Which is probably why you won’t hear the President say anything nice about him.

Full of stars,

This is dF
