ITEM: Music-based videogames, such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band, are having a significant and positive impact on music sales, according to a Jacobs Media web survey.

Of respondents who have played such games, nearly one-third say they’ve purchased songs featured on the games, the survey says.

In a way, I’m not surprised. Radio and MTV are deadweights in terms of promoting music, so it’s inevitable that music will find other promotion channels, be it car commercials, MySpace, Starbucks or The O.C. So why not a videogame? Sure. You’ve just got the high score on Rock Band – why not celebrate by buying a copy of the song as a memento of yr accomplishment?

That said, I wonder who’s getting the most benefit, saleswise – the lesser known bands on the soundtrack, or Slash?

Shut up and play yr guitar,

I reckon more people know "John the Fisherman" now than they ever did in Primus' heyday.

That's a good thing.

We just bought it last week. It's a completely great way to waste the day away. :)
