So here’s how my weekend’s gone:

Yes. Typhoon Nuri plowed right into us Friday. We had our first No. 9 warning signal (out of 10) in five years. Put 19 people in the hospital, and probably drowned one. (They haven’t found the body yet.) And of course we have a hundred or so less trees than we did on Thursday.

We got off light, as usual. Nuri killed seven in the Philippines before it got here, and three in Guangdong after it passed us.

I’m overselling it a bit. Personally I was in no physical danger, as I stayed home and there’s no bamboo scaffolding on my building to get blown through my window. And no disrespect, but the one fatality was due to the victim being one of those nimrods who go surfing during typhoons because that’s the only time you get any decent waves here.

Interestingly, here on Disco Bay we didn’t feel the full impact til around 8:30pm. For most of the day we were thinking, “Hmmm, looks like the action will be elsewhere.” Then the eye passed and the next thing you know, we’re finding out the hard way that our windows aren’t waterproofed to withstand Signal 9-level winds, and we’re scrambling to clear stuff out of the window bays and jam towels wherever we can to keep the water damage to a minimum.

Which we did. So we did okay.

Except the only thing to watch on TV was the Olympics. We’ll do a wrap-up on that later, but suffice to say if I never see another goddamn ping-pong table as long as I live, that’ll suit me just fine.

Okay.

FUN FACT: "Nuri" is the name of a blue-crowned parakeet in Malaysia. Funny sense of humor they have at the observatory.

Overblown,

This is dF
