Wow. Mitt Romney must be screaming his fool head off right about now.

Well, I don’t know a thing about Sarah Palin apart from her current job and what’s been said on the news, but I guess this means McCain isn’t the least bit worried about people seeing this as a transparent bid to counter Obama’s hotness and seem less like the Old White Establishment Guy that Barack Obama is not ... unlike, say, Joe Biden. (See what they did there?)

Credit to McCain for trying to make things more interesting. And it’s entirely possible he made the best possible move – look at his other well-known options. Giulani? Too liberal. Romney? Too Mormon. Tom Ridge? Former Bush stooge. Mike Huckabee? That might have worked, actually, except that Huckabee was the one hardliners wanted to win in the first place. An obscure outsider with a maverick rep – you know, like McCain was like 20 years ago – was arguably his only option.

So who knows? It might pay off. Though maybe he should have picked someone who’s not under investigation. But then what Republcian isn’t? Ha ha.

But unless Palin’s mike skills are jaw-droppingly good and she makes Biden look like a blithering idiot in their first debate (which will be a hard dollar indeed), they’re going to have a tough time topping the Monsters Of Obama festival that wrapped up in Denver. For now, at least, the rest of the campaign could be summed up thusly:

Old and busted

New hotness

Let’s watch, shall we?
