BREAKING NEWS: Krispy Kreme just went bust in Hong Kong.

Well damn. That didn’t take long. They only arrived here two years ago. Now they’ve shut down five of their seven stores. The only ones left running are the ones at the airport. For now.

I’m not surprised, though. Most local people I know said KK doughnuts were too sweet. And I have to admit, as much as I like them, two filled doughnuts per month was more than enough for me. And they discontinued the only two flavors I really liked (raspberry and strawberry shortcake), so it’s not like I’ll miss ‘em. Their coffee wasn't that great, either.

Still, chalk it up to the global recession, which is hitting HK too. Krispy Kreme HK is the fourth company to shut down in the last month or so, and the first overseas franchise to do so. The rest are locals, one of which – Tai Lin Radio Service – had been in business over 60 years. And there’s apparently more where that came from – especially if yr a small/medium sized business.

Thanks, greedy credit-swapping Wall Street f***heads.

Out of doughnuts,

This is dF

that's a shame... it means HK doesn't have decent donuts anymore.

Talk about coffee, last time we were in HK, the only decent "take away" coffee we could get near the Times Square area is Delifrance... finally, the Pokka cafe (near Victoria park) took pity on me and let me have them takeaway (after I told them I was a regular like 8 years ago). You certainly don't need Pacific Coffee closing down either... even though they are all overpriced!

Never cared for the Delifrance coffee myself, though in a pinch it's okay. The fact that you got Pokka Cafe to do it says a lot about yr charisma. Pacific Coffee is still my brand of choice. No idea what shape they're in, but maybe coffee is one of those staple foods that people will still buy and are snobbish enough to pay extra for rather than resort to McCafe.

I think Krispy Kreme Australia just folded as well, after a similarly short tenure.

Our two or three Starbuckses are hanging on, but I have no idea how--you can't walk a block in this city without walking past a real coffee shop.

One bit of good news: Borders is opening a new store, which I guess means that the buyout failed and they're healtheir than they thought.
