GOSH, YOU’VE ... REALLY GOT SOME NICE TOYS HERE

There’s an exhibition of vintage Japanese toys in progress over in the Cityplaza mall in Taikoo Shing near my office. Yesterday, I took time out from my lunch break to collect photographic evidence for yr pleasure.

PRODUCTION NOTE: By no means a comprehensive collection of all the toys in the exhibit. They’re in glass cases and there’s a lot of reflection, so it was hard to take decent pictures. And all I had was a cameraphone, which I pressed right up to the glass with the close-up focus setting. Still, I think some turned out pretty good.

The toys are cool, too. I love those old unsafe metal toys with the rusty sharp edges. The creepy baby dolls, not so much.

I saw a similar collection during a trip to the Ishiya White Chocolate Factory in Hokkaido three years ago. It has a small toy museum, though it includes toys from all over the world, not just Japan.

One day I’ll post all the photos from that. For now, you’ll have to settle for this:

hey, the far right one in the middle row - that's the girl from the famous milky candy store in Japan! I used to collect the mini tin cans they hold candies with, when HK still had many Japanese food stores.
