While we’re enjoying the Swine Flu revival, here’s some helpful PSAs ... from 1976.

DISCLAIMER: Not to make light of the current outbreak – I lived in Ground Zero for SARS six years ago – but as I understand it, the New Improved Swine Flu hasn’t killed anyone outside of Mexico, and I just saw on BBC News that Mexican health authorities have only confirmed that 20 of those 152 reported deaths were actually swine flu.

Granted, it could get worse. On the other hand, as Bruce Sterling points out, we already have a pandemic on our hands that really will kill you. It’s called AIDS.

I’m just saying.

We do indeed have an AIDS pandemic. We know how well that was handled when it began - WITH SILENCE and no acknowledgement from the US Goverment.

I would agree that theres a lot of news coverage of this thing, but I think its better than the reverse. What we all say if this thing does escalate. We would say why didn't the media warn us.

I guess it's not the amount of coverage it's getting so much as the OMG OMG tone in which it usually seems to be framed that makes me sneer at it. Still, a pound of prevention etc etc.

Being labelled as the "gay" disease cost the whole world a pandemic. next time there's something like this, make sure straight white people get it first before everyone would look for a cure.
