And I’m only bringing it up for the same reason Jon Stewart did: the fact that this non-story has apparently been one of the biggest news stories in America for THREE F***ING WEEKS.

Seriously. What’s up with that?

Okay, yes, I know it’s because cable news channels thrive on topless photos, phony outrage and attention whores like fashion model wannabes, Donald Trump and Perez Hilton. Which is why we’d be up to our hips in Prejeangate no matter what her position on gay marriage turned out to be.

So I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

To be fair, I appreciate that a lot of people feel strongly about gay marriage. So do I. But in the ongoing fight to make marriage an equal-opportunity institution, Prejeangate is at best a sideshow attraction to the real debate. Which, you may like to know,  suits the people defending Prejean just fine. It’s a classic red-herring play. If you can’t win an argument over the rights of gay people to get married, start an argument over the right of a beauty queen to be against it.

Trust me on this. The only people who win from things like this are the media and The Donald. All the rest of us will get out of it is a younger, hotter version of Joe The Plumber.
