They Might Be Giants has another new kids CD coming out: Here Comes Science!, featuring this song about the elements.
It’s pretty good, though it’s not quite as good as Tom Lehrer’s take on the periodic table.
No matter. I’m a fan of a lot of TMBG music, to include their previous “kids” records. And I hear the album’s opening track, “Science Is Real”, is already generating some Biblical heat in the Amazon.com comments section.
Which not only makes it a must-have, but also a must-listen for kids. I’m not a big believer in the “kids” genre of music, but if we have to have one, I’d much rather they listen to TMBG singing science blasphemy than, say, Hannah Montana singing whatever the hell it is she sings about.
(Okay, I’d rather kids listen to Slayer than Hannah Montana, but look, that’s just me.)
So I’ll be adding that to the music collection, you bet.
Sing a song of science,
This is dF

on 2009-09-11 10:45 am (UTC)I was raised with all of his songs. Singing "The Vatican Rag" for a school musical audition was one of my high points. When I was in IT as a project manager for network installations, I spent a long and weary night with a crew pulling cable and installing network jacks. Around 3 AM or so we had to go around testing them. The other senior guy on the crew was Paul, who is a few years older than I am. We discovered our mutual love for all things Lehrer that night and completely freaked out our troop of twenty-somethings as we roamed around the floors, checking jacks and singing "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park". It was a great night.

on 2009-09-11 11:33 am (UTC)I first heard of him when I was a teenager via some morning radio show that played "Masochism Tango", then later I heard a few other songs via Dr Demento, but it wasn't until years later when some of his albums got re-released on CD that I got an idea of who he was. I was amazed that he was really a mathematician who did songs as a hobby.
Didn't know about the Electric Co connection. But it makes sense.
