ITEM [via Threat Level]: The color-coded Homeland Security Advisory System – which has never been set lower than “yellow” (“an elevated significant risk of terrorist attacks”) since its launch in 2002, despite changing 17 times – is facing an overhaul.“There is currently indifference to the public Homeland Security Advisory System and, at worst, there is a disturbing lack of public confidence in the system,” the Homeland Security Advisory Council wrote Janet Napolitano, the Homeland Security secretary.
Their recommended solution: just drop those bottom two levels.
Yeah. That’ll fix it. The reason people have no confidence in the color alert system is because we never use the lower levels, and NOT because it’s a completely meaningless cover-yr-ass publicity stunt that also doubles as a handy way to scare voters.
Good call.
Of course, Napolitano still has the option of ignoring the panel’s suggestion, and could still scrap the system altogether – but then you’d have conservatives shouting about how Obama is making the country less safe (or better yet, scrapping the system to provide cover for his Communist Muslim al-Qaeda buddies so you’ll never see them coming – you watch, there’ll be a chain e-mail saying that in about a month).
Maybe they can compromise and adopt Bill Maher’s AccuTerror forecast model. Because it’s every bit as effective as the current system. Plus it's funnier.
