THE FUTURE, 20 YEARS AGO

ITEM: Pink Tentacle has posted pix from an illustrated series from Shonen Sunday magazine circa 1969 imagining what life will be like in the computerized future.
1989, in other words.
This is my personal favorite – mainly the bit on the left where robots dish out discipline to the unruly daydreamers with a whack on the head.

Obviously, they were a little optimistic. Though we do now have videophones, and things like telemedicine and 3DTV are closer than you think. Remote surgery by robot has already been done, and mobile phones can double as remote health monitors.
And 3DTV is far enough along that the inevitable format war has already started. Blu-Ray will have a 3D spec by the end of the year. And the first 3DTV broadcast channels will be available (in the UK) next year.
Of course, you’ll need 3D glasses for it to work. At least until Sony figures out how to turn its prototype 360º screen into a commercial product.
Duty now for the future,
This is dF
