FUN FACT: I joined the Army right around the time they were phasing out C-Rations and going to MREs (Meal, Ready To Eat). I never met an old-timer who thought MREs were an improvement. Us newbies didn’t much care for them either. Everyone had their own jokes on what MRE really stood for. My joke was to call it MNQRE (Meal, Not Quite Ready To Eat).

Which is why we were amazed to find out MREs were a popular item at Army surplus stores.

Anyway, the history of it is quite interesting.

A tonic for the troops,

I think it is a novelty thing. Non-soldiers are interested in what the MRE's are about. Novelty might not be the right word, but it is of particular interest. I remember being interested in them as a teen.

To prove yet again that my palate is not sophisticated, my brother and I would raid the MRE pile whenever it appeared (psuedo military brat, Civil Air Patrol in high school so I hung out at my fair share of bases).

Had some C-rations once, and I completely agreed with the old timers, MRE was not an improvement (although that never stopped me from finishing them all).
