MISSISSIPPI GODDAMN
Mar. 12th, 2010 11:00 amITEM: Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton, Mississippi, decides it would rather cancel the entire senior prom than be forced to allow a lesbian student to bring her girlfriend.
Naturally, everyone in Fulton (or at least in the comments section) blames the lesbian for ruining it for everyone by putting her own selfish Homosexual Agenda™ ahead of the everyone else’s. Because the First Amendment gives you a constitutional right to discriminate against homos as long as it’s for for religious reasons.
Apparently.
Anyway, I’d like to dedicate this post to the state of Mississippi – this is Nina Simone.
Technically she was singing about African Americans, but for the most part I think the lyrics still apply. We could argue all day about whether gays/lesbians have it as bad today as African Americans did in the early 1960s, but for my money, the mentality is basically the same: Big Fear for small minds.
DISCLAIMER: Ironically, of course, I have no use for proms. If my senior prom had been canceled, it wouldn’t have meant a thing to me – unless it was for a dumb-ass bigoted reason like this.

EDIT [04.06.2010]: The Itawamba County School Board later told the student, Constance McMIllan, that she and her girlfriend could go to a private prom at the Fulton Country Club that was set up to replace the canceled school prom. Only seven students turned up, and word has it all the other students were at a different private prom party, suggesting McMIllan was sent to a decoy prom. Developing ...
