Back in the 1970s, Parliament-Funkadelic offered a strange but brilliant mix of funk and science-fiction, with their live shows including a 20-foot “mothership” decked out with flamethrowers and disco balls.

The ship disappeared in 1982 and hasn’t been seen since.

The Washington Post (of all places) has an interesting write-up on the legend of the Mothership and whatever happened to it.

I'd have liked to have seen them, but like a lot of teenagers my age in Tennessee, I'd never heard of them until "Flashlight", by which time they were just about done as a band. It would be almost another ten years before I started discovering their old albums.
