defrogSo Miss Michigan, Rima Fakih, won the Miss USA posedown. And she’s a Lebanese immigrant AND a Muslim.
Cue conservative paranoid meltdown in 3, 2, 1 ...

To be fair, Debbie Schlussel is so batshit she makes Glenn Beck look like Noam Chomsky. Her slightly less hysterical peers are merely claiming some conspiracy by Donald Trump to force multicultural political correctness down America’s throats, and that the only reason Fakih won is because Miss Oklahoma dared to speak the truth about Arizona’s heroic immigration law that the pageant’s radical liberal judges just didn’t want to hear.
Etc.
Whatever. You know how I feel about the Miss USA contest. But I do find it interesting that the pageant has become yet another element of American pop culture that’s been politicized to extremes – not just on its own merits (i.e. sexism vs feminism) but regarding issues that have nothing to with it. Certainly the judges/writers can take a little blame – after all, they’re the ones bringing up political hot-potato topics like gay marriage and immigration.
On the other hand, I suspect Rima Fakih’s Muslimness probably would have been enough to set off the usual suspects.
Still, you have to admit it makes a change. Ten years ago, conservatives would have been more upset about her shady past as a pole dancer contestant.
