I’ve never been to the Ghibli Museum, but apparently when I go – and I intend to if I ever get back to Tokyo, for Hayao Miyazaki is made of WIN – I’ll see this.

And that’s yr pig for the week. And since I did already Porco Rosso for Pig #3 (or thereabouts), here’s a bonus Miyazaki pig image from Spirited Away:

Because we’re all about value for yr entertainment dollar here at Team Def.

Today was the Disco Bay Flea Market – or, as I like to call it, the Disco Bay Junk Swap, where half residents set up a booth in the plaza and sell the junk they don’t want, and the other half buys it. Then, three months later, they change sides.

Something like that.

We got a booth this time. And by “booth” I mean this:

GOT FLEAS?

That’s our shingle there – or what was left of it by around 3:30pm. We went down with four huge bags, two boxes and a suitcase, and came back up the hill with one huge bag, one smaller bag and one box.

Total haul (minus expenses): HK$1,657.00 (US$212.25)

Whether that’s good depends on yr point of view. It’s less than we made last time we did one of these. I made more money selling CDs to the Great Escape in Nashville. But then we were selling things for a pittance just to get rid of them. For example, those books you see were going for HK$5.00 each, and the videos for HK$2.00. So from a purely clear-out-junk-from-the-flat POV, we did okay.

And if yr wondering, I didn’t buy anyone else’s junk. I usually only care about the books and CDs anyway, and round here it’s all Top 10 Bestsellers – except for last time, when I managed to score five (5) Robert Rankin books in one shot. Which was nice. That family was there this time too, but no more Rankin, apart from what I’ve already read. Plenty of L.A. Banks, Laurell K Hamilton and Brian Lumley, mind. But vampire lit was never really my bag – apart from the first two Anne Rice books and the occasional Chelsea Quinn Yarbro.

And I have enough books to get through. As you’ll see shortly.

Okay. Now it’s time to eat. And if anyone has a good sunburn remedy, please post it below.

Insert Jeff Foxworthy joke here (or rather, don’t),

JUST FINISHED

Sin-a-rama: Sleaze Sex Paperbacks of the Sixties, edited by Brittany A. Daley, Hedi El Kholti, Earl Kemp, Miriam Linna, Adam Parfrey

Enjoyable exploration of the softcore porn book publishing business of the 1960s, which is interesting to me for a few reasons: (1) the great cover art, (2) the fact that one of my all-time favorite novelists, Lawrence Block (who, oddly, is collaborating with Wong Kar-wei these days), used to write them for a living (though I’ve never read any of them) and (3) the fact that the modern legal definition of obscenity in the US (the famous Miller test) stems from a case involving these types of books. Which is why we can write sex scenes with naughty words now. Anyway, the book is mostly a collection of cover art, so some more history or anecdotes or book excerpts would have been nice, but it’s still a great book for anyone interested in pulps and/or retro porn, though be advised that by modern standards, 60s sex novels are so tame, it’s amazing to think people really went to jail for writing, publishing and/or selling them. One thing of note: Lydia Lunch is listed as a contributor, but I didn’t see anything inside with her name on it. Just so you know.

Right Where You Are Sitting Now: Further Tales Of The Illuminati by Robert Anton Wilson

Because it’s been years since I read RA Wilson, and I need to top up my paranoia – it’s an election year, after all.
