This week’s rat: Basil the rat, from the last episode of Fawlty Towers.

Explanations here.

It’s hard to believe that they only made 12 episodes of Fawlty Towers (and that’s two seasons worth). Then again, it’s easier to maintain quality control over a show with a limited run rather than one that just goes on and on and on.

It’s in the bag,

And finally, we wrap up the series with props to the grocery store chain that invented the concept of self-service grocery stores: Piggly Wiggly!

FUN FACT:
Clarence Saunders, who founded Piggly Wiggly in Memphis in 1916, claims he came up with the name “Piggly Wiggly”  just so people would ask him why he picked such a dumb name. Which is braggable. It's a Southern thing.

And so much for the Year Of The Pig. The Year Of The Rat begins at midnight.

Up next: 52 Rats!

Seriously. Because you asked for it.

Well, 50 pigs done, two to go, and I haven’t even resorted to some of the more obvious pigs, like Babe, Piglet (from Winnie The Pooh), and, of course, Porky Pig.

Truth be told, much as I love Warner Bros toons, I never liked Porky that much. But I do like his outtakes:

Okay. We wrap up tomorrow. Who will be Pig 52? O the suspense!

Dramatic irony,

Meet Mr Truffles. And his small arms.

Incidentally, in light of the fact that the Year Of The Pig ends this Wednesday, we’ll be accelerating the schedule and releasing pigs on a daily basis from here on in.

Bet no one’s ever typed THAT sentence before.

FUN FACT: Someone’s made a version of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Sounds Of Silence” with a house beat. They’re playing it in Pacific Coffee now. It’s not doing anything for me.

Oh, wait, now it’s “Green Onions” by Booker T and the MGs. Much better.

Warp speed,

I’ve never been to the Ghibli Museum, but apparently when I go – and I intend to if I ever get back to Tokyo, for Hayao Miyazaki is made of WIN – I’ll see this.

And that’s yr pig for the week. And since I did already Porco Rosso for Pig #3 (or thereabouts), here’s a bonus Miyazaki pig image from Spirited Away:

Because we’re all about value for yr entertainment dollar here at Team Def.

Yr parents are pigs,

This week’s pig ... is animated.

For those of you who are behind in yr Japanese TV shows, it’s a reference to a drama called Nobuta wo Produce. Which doesn’t have pigs as such, but they make a keychain that looks like this at some point.

For more on Nobuta Power, we have video. She ends up doing that quite a bit throughout the show.

Now yr playing with power,

This week’s pig is the Lokuloku – a toy pig that retains its shape even if you splat it on the ground.

We have video for you, and like the Lokuloku, it is made of Awesome:

I am SO buying one of these if I ever get to Japan again and see one on sale.

Flattened,

Seeing as how it’s Christmas, this week’s pig comes to you courtesy of Kinky Friedman.

I haven’t read it, no. But Kinky Friedman’s Texas governor bid was the only election campaign worth watching in 2006, and he’s endorsed by Mojo Nixon, so close enough.

Heading into the final ten of our weekly chronicle of the Year Of The Pig.

This week’s pig courtesy of Al Capp’s Li’l Abner.

With possible assistance from Frank Frazetta.

No, I never really got into Li’l Abner – it had stopped running by the time I was old enough to appreciate the hillbilly babe factor (which was probably the only thing keeping it going by then). Thus, I have no clue as to the significance of the pig. But I’ve got a series to run here, and it gives me a flimsy excuse to post Frazetta hillbilly babes, so I don’t want to hear any sass.

Are you ready for the country,

This week’s pig is a local (i.e. Hong Kong-based) line of characters designed to sell gift merchandise – like, say, Forever Friends. Our version is a pig called Pork Chop.

Which is like naming a pet cow “Steak”, but, you know, whatever.

Pork chop bun,
