NUCLEAR ACCIDENTS, THE FALL OF EAST BERLIN, AND THE BEST CRABS MONEY CAN BUY

So it is written. So it is done.

Really. We’re finished here. We just completed four days of hard-hitting telephones journalism. Another successful mission. My flight doesn’t leave until tomorrow night so I have time to burn now.

Some fun facts about the last few days:

1. Tuesday night in a basement bar in Chijmes, I shared Jim Beam with an Israeli who told me he moved to Harrisburg, PA in '79, telling his family, “It’s cool, nothing ever happens in Harrisburg, PA.” A month later, Three Mile Island happened.

2. Later the same night, I shared more Jim Beam with a German woman who told me about the time she saw the Berlin Wall come down. The twist: the announcement happened while she was en route to West Berlin. She was expecting the usual security checks and rigamarole, and arrived to find West and East Germans partying in the streets.

3. Tonight we had a victory dinner at Long Beach Seafood on Dempsey Hill. Reportedy they have the best pepper crab and chilli crab in all the land.



I don’t know if it’s true, but it was pretty tasty.

Right. Tonight is for packing. Tomorrow is for hanging out with Agent RK and (hopefully) Agent K. And book hunting.
