I’ve been listening to the Kinks’
Misfits album recently, and while the whole album is brilliant, this track strikes me as being particularly relevant today.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The Left and Right are always going to fight over one thing or another, and it will always sound like things are getting worse, but no matter who’s right or who wins, you’ve got yr own life to live and all you can really do is get on with it.
Or not. Maybe I’m reading too much into it. But I do feel that way sometimes.
Maybe it’s because I don’t care for either side (if only because both of them have lost the plot). Because it’s thankless work, not choosing a team. It’s amazing how many people assume that criticism of one party is a full-on endorsement of the other. I’ve lost count of how many people on Facebook (easily the worst venue for a political debate outside of a church) accuse me of being a Bible-thumping Republican just because I made some flippant remark about Democrats. And vice versa.
So yeah. Sometimes I’m content to just get on with things and let the Left and Right scream at each other in their little melodrama.
That’s not the same as indifference, mind. I do have opinions, and I do like to express them (obviously). But while I like a good argument, I prefer a decent point-by-point debate, and that’s just not in fashion anymore in this age of either/or politics, memorized prefab talking points and hysterical polemics.
Which is why a song like “Live Life” is perfect for an album titled Misfits – because anyone who disagrees with both sides and doesn’t tow any single party line exclusively can easily be made to feel like one.
And I’ve felt that way all my life. So I’m in my comfort zone, anyway.
Stay cool and carry on,
