Remember when people used to complain about political campaigns being too negative?

Those days are over.

Which would be worrying enough if it was just the one meeting. But it seems for the past week, every McCain rally has been populated by Angry White People who openly fear Barry HUSSEIN Obama. He is obviously an agent of al Qaeda and McCain must do whatever it takes to stop him. And incidentally, I seriously doubt this is a recent phenomenon. (See: O’Reilly, Hannity, Coulter, Malkin, Savage and other drama queens.)

The irony, of course, is that McCain really has no one to blame but himself – or at least his running mate. When you go around claiming Obama “pals around with terrorists”, you can’t act all surprised and dismayed when yr fans take that insinuation and extrapolate it to “He supports al Qaeda” – especially when many of them already believe he’s a Muslim (and we all know what THEY’RE like).

Imagine how these people are going to take the news if Obama wins. Imagine what it will say about the state of America if that anger spreads and Obama loses as a result. You might as well hang a sign on the White House door: “No blacks, no Muslims, no dogs.”

I don’t think it will come to that. I’d still like to think these dingbats are in the minority. But it’s still a very ugly sign of the times.

I have to say, for all his faults and selling out his original maverick principles, I always thought that, at heart, McCain was basically a decent guy – which is to say, not the evil twisted piece of work that, say, Dick Cheney is. And based on this latest scenario, I think it's clear that however good his intentions were or are, McCain is now officially in over his head.

I think he never wanted it to come to this, and kept telling himself it wouldn't, that the ends justified the means and all he had to do was keep his mouth shut and kiss the right ass and make the right attacks and it would be fine, I mean, no one's really going to believe that Obama is an actual terrorist, right?

Now it's all slipping beyond his control and he sees now what he has to do, and now he's like the guy who just read the fine print on the contract he signed with the Devil. Even if somehow he wins, he may hate himself for it.

There was a time when I liked McCain. Then, he won the nomination and slipped to the Right to shore up his support among that side of this party and now we get the twisted hypocritical gray pile of shite that appears on the news 4 or 5 times per news cycle.

Sigh.

Yeah, I actually had respect for him eight years ago. But once he learned the only way to win was to play ball with The Right People, I wrote him off. It's like some strange King Lear tragedy, in a way.

Yeah he hired the same people who smeared him and his family. I don't get that at all.

And look how well THAT'S working out. Between this and the Palin Ethics Report, I'd say the swing vote just swung in Obama's favor. Thanks, Angry Mob!
