ITEM: Wall Street Journal columnist James Taranto says that if national security turns out to be the #1 issue in the 2012 presidential election, the GOP’s best bet is ... Dick Cheney.Of course it’s not a new idea. That one has been batted around for a few months now.
But a number of conservatives are reportedly taking the idea seriously.
Which is silly, of course. When it’s 3.5 years to the next election, you can make the case for just about anyone as a likely candidate. Hell, at this stage I’m sure even Ron Paul has just as good a chance as anyone else. So it sounds like wishful thinking to me.
On the other hand, why not? All the other GOP hopefuls to date have quit, washed out, had affairs or otherwise made fools of themselves. Meanwhile, Cheney’s been lurking all over the Sunday talk shows predicting that Something Horrible is going to happen in Iraq, Afghanistan or even American soil, just so he can pop up later and say, “See? I told you this would happen if you voted Democrat. Obama pulled out of Iraq and closed Gitmo and stopped torturing people and look what happened. I hope yr satisfied.”
Conservatives swoon when he does that.
Which is telling, isn’t it?
So is the fact that the DNC are already running anti-Cheney ads.
You know, just in case history repeats itself.
No fool like an old fool,
