LISTEN TO MY LAST WORDS OF 2009

And so much for 2009, and the 00s in general. I don’t really have much to add to all of the year-end/decade-end wrap-ups and summaries you’ve been seeing and have yet to see. But on the whole, I think we can agree that on the whole, the 00s sucked.
Unless yr a neo-con. In which case the 00s were the best time you’ve had since the 80s – at least up until November 2008, but let’s admit it, even that’s worked out pretty well for the conservatives so far.
For everyone else, though, the 00s – or as I now call them, the Batshit Reality Schism Decade – was a decade defined by fear, war, greed, superstition and reality television.
It wasn’t all bad, mind. We also got fast computers, iPods, Web 2.0, GPS and sexting FTW!
Certainly there have been far worse decades (the 1930s and 40s come to mind). And admittedly, science-fiction fans like me have always looked to the ‘00s as a milestone towards the Big Shiny Jetpack Future we were promised as kids. But while we knew in 2000 that we weren’t quite there yet, it's hard to shake the notion that really, the decade should have been a lot better than it turned out to be.
Somehow, I don’t expect the ‘10s to be any better. I could be wrong. But it’s hard to be optimistic when Farrah Fawcett, Lux Interior and Walter Kronkite are dead, the biggest pop culture icons going into 2010 are Lady Gaga and sparkly vampires, and the last thing we’ll see on television is a terrorist’s shredded underpants. There will be more where that came from.
So yes. I’m a barrel of fun on New Year’s Eve, me.
But never mind. I have the usual tools at my disposal to see me through: my iPod, my books, my laptop, my Internet connection, and all of you. Thanks for putting up with me this long, and see you after the ball drops.
