ITEM: A sex survey has found that Australians who enjoy bondage and discipline are not damaged or dangerous, and might even be happier than those who practise "normal" sex.

Yes, this is apparently news. Though to be fair, I guess it IS news to most people who know what little they know about it from Hollywood movies and TV shows, where BDSM people are usually portrayed as disturbed murderers who were raped as children.

Still, there was one interesting finding in this study:

Men who take part may be happier, with results showing they score significantly lower on a scale of psychological distress than other men.

Well, duh. I personally find that a good spanking cheers me right up.

Not that science will change anyone’s mind about such things, especially these days. That said, I do wonder if mainstream acceptance of BDSM would take the fun out of things like, oh, S&M Hunter.

ITEM [via trillsie]: Mattel’s new collector’s edition Black Canary Barbie® is due out in September.

Cue the inevitable.



Oh, DO stop.

I’m not particularly interested in defending Barbie, and I’m not that big a fan of Black Canary as a character, either. But I do find it funny that people can look at this toy and say, “O look! Barbie is promoting S&M to children!” Especially when (1) most kids have no concept of what BDSM is, and certainly wouldn’t get it from a Barbie in a superhero outfit, and (2) no one’s ever said that about Black Canary, even though she (and her daughter) have been wearing that costume since 1947.

Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a dominatrix dress like this. Maybe I don’t get out enough. But I have five American dollars that says dominatrixes only wear an outfit like this on request (presumably from customers who want to be dominated by Black Canary).

Besides, a proper BDSM Barbie would look nothing like that.

Actually, it’s more like a 50s rockabilly/burlesque theme party. Not quite as awesome as a ship full of Betties. But a ship full of burlesque queens, pompadours, bowling shirts and riding crops ain’t a bad way to celebrate Halloween, either.

In theory, anyway.

Potential disappointment: no mention of any “punishment rooms” or rope-tying classes on the “entertainment” page.
