well, I use either black or white. My stepson doesn't like black pepper and won't eat anything if he sees it. Well, to keep from changing the taste of what I fix, I started using white pepper because then he couldn't see it. He has no idea that there's pepper on/in the food. He just knows he likes it.
Also, I'll use white pepper in soups or other foods that are light in color so you don't see the black specs in it. Anything else will get black pepper.

I'm just like trillsie. The only thing I would add is that I also use white pepper in a lot of asian cooking.
